So the summer is here, and I keep looking out of my window, dreaming about what to do today and the next. It serves no purpose to stand here all cooped-up inside my tiny apartment, I start to think about doing other things with my precious time while the summer creeps through the city, and except for the schools' periods of activities, it stays the same pretty much all year round. I think about all the ways I have crept through the city, at night sometimes, but more often its the New York City subway winding through the city's expanse during the day as people here have to work for what they get.
I rode my bicycle around the parks and across some of the urban sprawl as I sail through the crowds of people, and to my version of the school schedule, college life and also riding to my old job as a waiter at this one delicate Italian restaurant. I remember my time going to and fro around town, but that was mostly when I had that first job, only since I have found myself without car, have I recently been relying upon my skill riding bikes. All through high school I drove here and there, carting my friends to their houses and to parties, and just driving upstate New York and to New Jersey on occasion.
That was around the time I started working on my bachelor's degree, and I needed to travel quickly and easily through the boroughs, it helped me get my girlfriend at the time as well. She loved that automobile, and I must admit that it was a neat little coupe, though the mileage was terrible. I got rid of that thing when I crashed one night after drinking too much, and even though I wasn't drastically injured, it haunts me that I could have been killed. I always got shaky behind the wheel for months after that, and that was when I began getting friendly with the New York City subway and bus systems, I'm lucky to live in a city with so many options when driving a car does not seem that great an option.
Now, I work at a pizzeria just around the corner and ride my bike almost everywhere, and whenever it happens to be more convenient, I enjoy using the New York City subway system to get me around here. The fare system is simple, whether you decide to go with tokens or the cards that you can purchase for two dollars, but either way leads you through an extensive network of tunnels and stations. With Metrocards working universally between the bus routes, which can be difficult to handle with the traffic that passes through the streets, and the subways that might seem a little too claustrophobic on those off days. As for me, I think I will just keep pedaling my way around here, and I finish classes in April next year. Until then, I'll just sleep here in my cozy little apartment, and let the city do all the talking. |
